The Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (‘ICCC’) would like to inform relevant stakeholders and the general public of the release of the Final Report relating to the inquiry into the Motor Vehicle Retail Prices in PNG (‘Inquiry’). 

The Inquiry was undertaken at the request of the Government who asked the ICCC to review and investigate how vehicle dealers changed their prices after the 2019 reduction in customs tariffs on motor vehicles. 

The approach taken to carry out this Inquiry was to investigate the effectiveness of competition in the motor vehicle market. If competition is effective, no individual vehicle dealer will have the market power to maintain high margins, and they will need to adjust their prices as their costs change. To do this the dealers’ margins and profitability were investigated, compared PNG prices to prices for the same vehicle models in other countries and considered factors of competitions and the effect these factors have on prices. 

The ICCC has completed the inquiry and has prepared a Final Report highlighting key findings of this Inquiry. This includes competition in the new and used car markets, profit margins, international pricing comparisons, and consumer protection issues among others. 

The ICCC would like to thank the relevant stakeholders who have participated by way of providing comments and submissions relating to any aspects of this inquiry. 

On that note, the ICCC now release the Final Report relating to the inquiry into the Motor Vehicle Retail Prices in PNG to the relevant stakeholders and the general public.
